Do you ever think about telling your stories about your lab work on stage? Do you ever want to share your ambition and enthusiasm in science with other people who are not working in this field? Do you ever want to tell stories that seem very normal in your daily work but are quite interesting actually?
Most of the time, I do not consider my life in lab interesting enough to share with friends, as all the experiments are logically designed and well controlled. What can you do with very elegant science? I am a person with lot of humor in daily life; however, I would have to think hard about how to tell stories of my science.
I would not have realized that my humor ever happened in my lab work, unless I was invited by a friend to a story talk show named “The Politics of Science.” It was my first time to go to a talk show in a Domn Theater. There were 7 story tellers, who came from different areas in science. They shared stories about interviewing for their science department, teaching, dealing with animal experiments and how to explore the mysteries of nature with awe and courage.
I was shocked by the story of a guy who quit graduate-school. In the first part of his story, he described how he did studies with live monkey by measuring and recording their behavior every day. It was not easy for him to try to communicate in the monkey’s language. Even though he got accidentally scratched by the monkeys, he still enjoyed them.
One day, he got a box from his co-worker which containing one of his most active monkeys’ brain, as eventually they needed to sacrifice them to study their brain. He made the decision to quit school. Emotionally, he could not accept the truth that he had to use the brain from a “friend” to study on.
At the end of the show, I was inspired by the story of a senior investigator. He told us how he developed his career, and explored the mysteries of the nervous system in fish and got some incredible findings.
I consider this event a successful one, as it is the first time I listened to stories of science with lot of emotion and passion, and without complicated slides. It was more like the best of humanity and nature. I can feel the peace to do my best to uncover the secrets of life.
