Hello Everyone!
This time we’re going to take a look at three foundational principles that will keep you organized and focused on your job search.
Anyone who has read my blogs for a long time knows that I am a firm believer in not spinning your wheels. Spinning your wheels causes anxiety, frustration, and hopelessness, and you as a job seeker cannot afford such things.
On a macro level, I want you to spend time on these three things, and organize your specific efforts within this framework. The three things are: Thinking time, Study time, and Do time.
#1 Thinking Time: This is where you sit down and brainstorm about what you have been doing, what you’d like to do next, and what types of companies and organizations can use you. This is where you honestly assess strengths and weaknesses in yourself.
#2 Study Time: This is where you research companies, organizations and people who can utilize you, or help you from a learning and networking perspective. This is also where you make several versions of your resume, based on specific targets.
#3 Do Time: This is where you execute the plan. You are on the phone, attending meetings and events, writing emails and sending letters.
Sound simple, right? It is, BUT the problem is people tend to do #3 without doing 1 and 2. Worse yet, they only do one aspect of #3, such as just sending resumes. Or they are too lazy and do a halfway version of #3, like just searching job boards and LinkedIn.
On the other hand, many job seekers spend too much time in areas 1 & 2. This is known as dithering, and is a sign of either laziness or fear. I say fear because area # 3 is stressful and full of potential conflict and rejection, so we get scared. To that, I say you don’t have time to be scared; get in there and go after it. It can show laziness because if you put in effort and do a good job in area 1, areas 2 and 3 make sense and you can proceed based on solid footing. If you shortchange area #1, you won’t get anywhere and also repeat dumb life patterns.
Repeat after me. The horse goes ahead of the cart for a reason. Anything else is a waste of time and energy.
Job search is never about one thing. It is about many things done well, in a consistent pattern.
Until next time, I wish you all the best.
